On my own

Today was my first full day all by myself! I'm used to having roommates whenever I move to a new city temporarily, so this is definitely a first. But I don't mind it at all! I love immersing myself into a new city/culture and exploring outside of my comfort zone. I find that it makes life more interesting and definitely adventurous. I think it helps me learn more about myself, seeing the potential I have within me and helps me grow as a person. I feel most alive when I travel like this. :)

I slept in this morning since I was still jetlagged and sick with a sore throat, but I made myself get up because I wanted to check out the farmer's market across the street. They are there every Sunday and Thursday. I didn't buy anything since I knew I probably wouldn't feel like cooking just yet, but it was like a zoo! One of these days I will buy some fresh veggies and fruit to make some meals at home.

I was getting hungry so I went to C-town/Viet town to look for this banh mi (Viet sub) shop, but I couldn't find the one Michel showed me the other day. But luckily, I stumbled across another popular banh mi shop and bought one there! I hurried back to the apartment to eat it! I don't have to worry about getting fat here since I have to climb up 6 stories of stairs everyday since there is no elevator in this complex. I guess that could be a good thing I suppose except when carrying heavy luggage. :( It was pretty hot out today so I opened up all the windows to let some fresh air in and just sat on the couch watching some tv and eating my banh mi, cherries, and orange mango juice. I didn't feel like exploring today since I didn't feel that great, so I ended up taking a nap. It was really nice sleeping in my bed with the windows open and fresh air coming in. I kept having the weirdest dreams!

Anyhoo...I woke up and it was time to eat again haha. I was feeling really lazy and was going to eat the Frosted Flakes cereal I got the other day for dinner, but I thought I should really get some soup so I can feel better again. I made some tea first and then went to the Monoprix (supermarket) right down the street, but it was closed. :( Since I was out already, I made myself go back to c-town/v-town for some pho again. I went to the restaurant Michel recommended..this place always has a lot of people in there! It's so funny, the French people here LOVE Asian cuisine and pho!!! I sat by myself and ordered a bowl of pho and of course I took a pic of it. I said everything in French while ordering so I was pretty proud of myself that they understood! Then this guy at the table next to me asked if I was a food critic! haha I got a kick out of that, but I said no...I guess I have a food blog. He was sitting with some people from Canada that were visiting Paris so they were asking me questions and we ended up talking. I felt like Anthony Bourdain! haha But this is what I like most about traveling, especially on my own. You just meet the most interesting people from all walks of life! I love listening and learning about what they have to say and where they came from and all that jazz. They got up to leave and the French guy came over and wrote on my check his email address and asked to hope to keep in touch. He apologized for being in a rush, but that he had to see his friends off since it was their last night.

I paid my bill and walked home. It was such a lovely night out for a stroll! I love the area where I am living right now. I feel so safe and I love that everything I need is conveniently located in such a short distance. I love how people are so polite and we constantly exchange "Bonjour!" or "Bonsoir!" or "Merci!" whenever we walk on by. I was standing out on the balcony in my apartment and thought to myself, "I did it! I'm here!" I can't believe I was wishing for this for months and that it actually happened. I hope I continue to have some more great experiences throughout the summer!

So I have been taking it easy and taking care of my cold so it doesn't get worse because I want to be 100% better before I start work on Wednesday. But I have some exciting news! My teacher's contact (Jacqueline) that helped me find this apprenticeship emailed me to invite me to a couture fashion conference tomorrow! She said, "it would be a great opportunity to learn more about a luxury fashion collection and really experience Paris fashion with the professionals. There will also be some students who are your age and this can be a good opportunity to meet new people, locals or even people from other countries such as my Chinese intern." Of course I said yes to going! I can't wait! I just have to figure out what to wear now! I already looked up on hopstop how to get there by metro. Thank God for hopstop! I've been using it ever since I lived in NYC a few summers ago. It tells me step by step how to get from one place to the next.

I'm definitely going to say YES to whatever good opportunity that comes my way, cuz you just never know who you'll meet or what other opportunities it'll take you to. Oh Michel was also telling me there are a few public swimming pools for the summer by his neighborhood that are really clean and filled with filtered water so I might try to check that out at some point. And there is a floating pool on top of the Seine River he was saying! I definitely want to see what that looks like! Sounds so cool!

Guess I should try to get a good night's rest, so on that note...Bonne nuit! :)
